BDP and Mam Tor

A hike with colleagues

Text by colleague:  Elena Arnedo Calvo

Last Sunday, we went for our first BDP Hiking Club walk (Sheffield + Manchester studio).

It was a sunny and beautiful day and somebody said: “what a glorious day for starting our BDP Club walks”. The experienced hikers in the group knew, however, that the cold was waiting for us at the peak of Mam Tor ; a chilling – 8 °C. Unfortunately, the inexperienced beginners left their thermal clothes at home and wore comfortable pants, jeans and trainers, which were not waterproof: what a big mistake! We learnt two lessons that day: always, always, always check the weather at the top of the hill and never, never, never wear permeable clothing when you go to the mountains for a hike!

Our original walk leader had a setback that morning and couldn’t come for the hike. However, another colleague from the Manchester office quickly took charge was able to guide us along the correct route and we proceeded with the walk as planned.

We had a clear day, with no rain, and we were able to see the snowy mountain tops and admire the beauty of the Peak’s Landscape. During our climb to the ridge – between BackTor and Hollins Cross – we noticed the strong wind against our backs, pushing us uphill. It was even stronger when we reached the top of Mam Tor, where we decided to take a picture (see above) to capture our achievement! Although it was hard to go up, it was even worse to descend, fighting to keep our feet on the ground!

Once we were at a sheltered, windless area, we had a break where hikers took out snacks and shared them with each other. A special recognition to the vegan handmade cookies that were utterly delicious (Shall ask for recipe!)

After having our sandwiches and snacks, all of us agreed to finish the walk the proper way: having tea, coffee and or beer at the local pub, located next to the Edale train station. It was a very good experience: talking and bonding with nice people and fighting against the wind together.. In my opinion, it was definitely worth it. Perhaps the only thing that can be improved next time is lunch, with the aforementioned cookies as a dessert (of course).
